What is ghee?
Made through the process of clarifying butter, ghee is one of the most nourishing foods available on earth. It is an effective and delicious way to consume the proper fats needed for a healthy body and brain, and a mind that is calm and at ease. The nurturing and nourishing qualities of ghee have been revered since ancient times, as noted in the AyurVedic texts.
Our ghee stands on its own.
What makes it so unique?
- We honor the traditional AyurVedic recipe and follow to
perfection the ancient guidelines for preparation of ghee.
- We never overheat, burn or caramelize the ghee, thus
preserving and maintaining its exceptional nutritional value.
- Our ghee is always slow-cooked in small batches.
- We use only the highest quality organic, nonGMO butter that
has never been exposed to pesticides or artificial hormones.
- Our cows are happy cows that roam freely all year long and graze on organic, nonGMO grass.
- We never put our ghee in any kind of plastic containers to avoid plastic leaching into the ghee.
- We only use lead-free glass.
- Our ghee is prepared in a solar-powered kitchen.
Traditional Methods to Create Brain-Gold
This ghee is made following the traditional Ayur Vedic methods for proper preparation to ensure the highest quality and most nutritional value. Slow cooked in small batches to remove all the water and milk solids, this is one of the most perfectly prepared and refined pure ghee available.
There is no burning or ‘smoking’ of our butter while making the ghee. Some brands overcook their ghee to enhance the nutty flavor, creating a less healthy “burnt” ghee. Ancient texts caution about never digesting burnt foods including ghee. Ours is always slow cooked for best flavor and quality without the need to use high heat.
It is worth noting that this product is lactose and gluten free. The refinement process used in making traditional ghee boils out all milk solids and lactose. And, it is not mixed or diluted with other oils or sources of butter.
Ghee Has a Versatile Use in Diet
Ghee, with its deliciously mild nutty flavor, makes a wonderful addition to any of your favorite dishes and snacks. You may cook with ghee in the same manner you would butter, coconut oil or olive oil. It can also be used to heat up herbs and spices, then drizzled over meals for extra flavor and nutrition. Just like butter, you can spread ghee on a nice healthy piece of bread or over your roasted or steamed vegetables…or popcorn.
Why ghee is a superstar in the kitchen:
- Use it like butter! Great for cooking, baking and drizzled over snacks.
- Nutritionally superior, ghee is full of brain-healthy fats & Vitamins A, E & K.
- Our ghee has a melt-in-your-mouth flavor unlike any other.
- It is smooth, nutty and delicious.
- Ghee is nurturing to the body, brain and mind.
- It calms the nervous system and relieves tension in the body.
- Ghee is good for digestive health & suitable for those eating lactose-free.
Ghee has many health-related uses
Ghee isn't just a delicious edible, you can use it for your skincare and massage practices as well. There are many recipes for Ayur Vedic abhyanga oil that include the use of ghee, as well as herbal oils to be applied externally for medicinal purposes. Ghee can be melted and massaged into the skin, to aid in relaxation and improve sleep. We even use ghee in our anti-aging face cream formula, Loving Lift Skin Cream!
Ghee for brain health
A healthy brain needs lots of fat to do its job properly. Ghee is an excellent source of natural fat that is easily absorbed and assimilated throughout the body. This healthy fat is essential building and maintaining a healthy brain. It supports memory and refinement of conscious experience.
Ghee is Nourishing & Nurturing
Ghee is a good source of brain healthy fats and vitamins. For centuries it has been known to calm and soothe the most frazzled of minds and tense of bodies.
AyurVedic Perspective on Ghee
In addition to the traditional method of production, Ayur Veda offers a treasure trove of knowledge regarding ghee’s contribution to one’s bodily health, clarity of mind, and length of life.
In the classic AyurVedic texts, Susruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita, ghee is described numerous times as beneficial for the entire physiology.
Regarding digestion, the texts speak of ghee’s effects on the PITTA dosha, the transformative ‘fire’ in every cell and in the digestive system. Ghee helps maintain proper levels of digestive fire, not too much and not too little. For example, "If the gastric fire is kindled by fuel in the form of ghee, then it cannot be suppressed, even by food that is too heavy"
Digestion is critical for health, and ghee can help keep the flames of digestion burning in the face of too much and too-heavy food often found in the Western diet.
Ghee helps do all this and more:
-Stimulates nutritional transportation and the removal of wastes—Ama.
-Improves absorption and assimilation in the digestive system.
-Balances ALL three doshas—hence, Tridoshic—balancing Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
-Increased production of the most refined substance in the physiology—Ojas.
-Creates a sattvic influence on bodily and mental functions, enhancing harmony and strength.
In summary, ghee's predominant taste is sweet and it has an overall cooling influence on the body. It’s special effect on the body is to enhance or ‘kindle’ the digestive fire and increase the most subtle and valuable substance in the physiology—Ojas.
We are happy to be able to offer you the highest quality, most delicious tasting, organic ghee produced from grass-fed, happy cows using the traditional Ayur Vedic methods.
Is Ghee a PreProbiotic?
The microbiotic cells of the colon produce and use butyric acid (butyrate) as their preferred source of energy and their major agent for supporting the health and integrity of the intestinal wall. Since butyrate is the main component of ghee, a small amount in the diet can likely enhance your microbiome as well as functioning of the cells lining the gut.
Initial research suggests dysfunctional digestive systems may be, in some cases, due to a lack of butyrate. This suggests that a diet supporting proper microbiotic populations, plenty of preprobiotics, and daily ghee can be very helpful. This maybe the modern understanding of the age-old knowledge of AyurVeda stating ghee’s ability to improve absorption and assimilation in the digestive system
Our ghee is certified Organic by IDALS and by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
It comes from one of the most sought-after producers of organic butter.
The butter used to make our ghee comes from the milk of grass-fed, pasture-raised ‘organic’ cows who have never been exposed to pesticides, antibiotics or grain feeds. The deep yellow color of our ghee displays the quality and nutrient density it contains.
Our ghee has a rich and wholesome nutty, buttery flavor that is deeply satisfying to eat and cook with. The consistency is creamy and smooth. We know that you will love it.
The general public is becoming more aware of the dangers of using plastic for storing and containing foodstuffs. There is now evidence suggesting it is not just the BPA plastics that are harmful to our health, but many more of them as well. According to the MayoClinic the use of BPA and other plastics has been linked to health problems on the "brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children." We believe it is important to use glass as a means of storing and providing our products to you as well. We use only safe and nonreactive glass for all of our products, including our Ghee. Be sure to only buy products contained in glass, preferably the lead free glass we use.
