Hydrogen Peroxide and Oral Health: Safe or Unsafe?
Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical product made by adding an extra oxygen molecule to a water molecule. This process creates a highly reactive molecule that can attack other molecules. Hence it’s usefulness in fighting bacteria and skin infections, etc. Thus, many people use this as a first-aid staple, and some are experimenting with this for oral care as well. What is actually taking place when we use hydrogen peroxide? And is it safe to be used as a rinse to swish in the mouth?
Any strongly reactive chemical agent is considered to have harmful side effects. Hydrogen peroxide is a common ingredient in hair dyes and bleaches! It is something that is even considered ‘poisonous’ if swallowed.
We find hydrogen peroxide to be a strong irritant, and a harmful, toxic substance that should NOT be used in the mouth, in any form. Hydrogen peroxide is known to cause sensitivity, painful throbbing and blisters in the mouth, and even the shrinking of gums.
The way that hydrogen peroxide kills bacteria in the mouth is by destroying the cell wall of all microflora it comes into contact with. This process indiscriminately damages and destroys ‘bad’ bacteria along with healthy gum cells and any ‘good’ bacteria. Thus, those who do use hydrogen peroxide as an oral rinse or whitener are destroying all types of microflora in the mouth, not just the “bad” ones. All of the healthy, beneficial microflora in the mouth and even healthy skin cells are damaged and destroyed by this process.
Most OTC dental bleaching kits use some form of oxidizing radical like H2O2. But, the bleaching action many seek from hydrogen peroxide commonly comes with gum nerve irritation, inflammation and stripping and/or destruction of enamel.
“Well, what about dilution?”
Unfortunately, even when diluting hydrogen peroxide with water, it is still the same substance, only watered down. Why would we want to dilute a harmful substance to make it LESS harmful? Why not just use a healthy, non-irritating, natural product to start with?
The good news is there are safe, effective products available to you here, and now.
To produce our Healthy Mouthwash, we utilize the synergistic properties of three types of ingredients: the inner fillet of aloe vera, xylitol, and selected essential oils to help balance the mouth ecology while also nurturing and nourishing the teeth and gums.
Xylitol: Research documents xylitol eliminates preferentially ‘bad’ caries-producing bacteria, thus preventing unhealthy bacterial growth and the formation of plaque.
Aloe vera: Laboratory tests show aloe vera increases skin growth! This is all helpful for those with irritated or receding gums.
Essential Oils: These natural substances are known to be anti-fungal, anti-bacterial while stimulating healthy cell metabolism.
We want to focus on building, and nourishing, not dissolving, and taking away.
If you are looking for a natural product to replace your use of hydrogen peroxide as an oral rinse, please consider trying out our Healthy Teeth and Gums Mouthwash. We think you will find it not only pleasing but highly effective, with no toxic or damaging side-effects.
